The Batizado (baptism) is an annual event for Capoeira schools, during which new students (with less than 1 year of experience) are "baptized" into Capoeira and receive their first (green) cord.

To be baptized, the student plays Capoeira in the roda against the mestre or other instructors, to demonstrate their skill.

It is after the Batizado that new students typically receive their Capoeira apelido (nickname), by which their instructors and fellow students will call them.

Students who already have cords may also be awarded a new, higher-ranking cord at the Batizado.

Higher-ranking students typically open the Batizado ceremony with an exhibition of Maculelê.
